Finally watched The Apartment. I adored it. Jack Lemmon is the most darling thing. And Shirley M. is wonderful. I just loved it! I just loved it! It took me forever to watch this finally and it was well worth my anticipation.

Hey pals, can we be better at this stuff? I want to know what is going on in your lives! I want to be up in the down. I'm planning my first Thanksgiving. I'm really excited. These are some things:

I've been trying to eat much more simple and fresh. Its being completely sabotaged by the white fudge covered holiday oreos. 300 a pop. the cal count adds up. Gotta be healthy.

ok. seriously. he was a dish. i'm going through this very strange Tom Hanks thing. I realized I like Tom Hanks so much. He makes funny cameos. His personal life is interesting. We've been watching his son Colin on Dexter. I haven't seen most T.Hanks movies. Marshall and I decided to make a marathon of it. We watched Philadelphia (incredible. so moving. so great), Cast Away (wilson4lyfe), Saving Private Ryan (you just always feel safe when t.hanks is around), and Bachelor Party (awful. 80s awful and I enjoyed it). Up to bat, League of Their Own and Green Mile.

I am still looking for a stud gun. D.P. and I have been on the hunt for a while.

I just finished watching all of 6 feet under. My favorite of tv of all time. I think about how much I loved the characters and the show's set up and the story line often. I always think about the lady at the bookstore who told me how much I would love it and how it was the best of all. I want to see her again! Tell her how right she was!

Frusciante was the guitar player for the Red Hot Chili Peppers from 1988-1992 and then again in 2002-2009. (thank the heavens he came back. Dave Navarro is the worst.) His solo stuff is killer. He is just a great guitar player. I think Rolling Stone put him at #18 of the best 100 EVER. I'm pretty bummed to see him leave RHCP. Besides guitar work I love his backing vocals.

Anyways, he's not going to disappear, his solo albums are great and he collaborates with people like George Clinton and the Mars Volta.

Macaroni & Cheese with Cauliflower

Corey and I decided to start trading recipes that we have really enjoyed on here. This is from the Jessica Seinfeld book Deceptively Delicious. The recipes are all about sneaking vegetables into your food in the form of purees. I have only tried this recipe so far but it is one of mine and Marshall's favorites. We eat it like every 2 weeks. The cauliflower makes the mac super creamy and the taste is completely masked by cheese and other good stuff. duh! To make the puree all you have to do is steam a head of cauliflower in a rice cooker or a veg steamer and puree it in a blender, bullet blender, or food processor. freeze and label whatever you don't use and have it instantly on hand the next time you want mac. It'll be soon, this mac is too dang good.

Servings: Serves 4

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups elbow macaroni
Nonstick cooking spray
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1/2 cup nonfat skim milk
1/2 cup butternut or cauliflower puree
1 1/2 cups shredded reduced-fat Cheddar cheese (about 8 ounces)
4 ounces (almost 1/4 cup) reduced-fat or nonfat cream cheese
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon paprika
1/8 teaspoon pepper

Directions

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, add the macaroni and cook according to package directions until al dente. Drain in a colander.

While the macaroni is cooking, coat a large saucepan with cooking spray and heat over medium heat. Add the oil, then the flour, and cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture resembles a thick paste but has not browned, 1 to 2 minutes.

Add the milk and cook, stirring every now and then, until the mixture begins to thicken, 3 to 4 minutes. Add the vegetable puree, Cheddar, cream cheese and seasonings and stir until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth. Stir in the macaroni and serve warm.

I miss my grandma today.

This is a poem she wrote a few years ago after she began one of countless rounds of chemo.

This is something I hold onto very much and feel shy to share. Its wonderful and is the perfect illustration of how tender yet tough she was.

My Calvary

Recently I have begun a new regimen of chemotherapy treatments

for cancer.

The side-effects and allergic reactions have been devastating.

A rash which covered most of my body, except my face, became large sores and peeling skin.

My hands were red and sore and cracking and peeling at every knuckle and crevice.

I have looked at them both at times when they were really bad and thought, with gratitude,

"At least I will not have to feel nails driven through them."

My walk has become slower and slower as I exert what energy I can muster to do everyday chores,

But then I think, "I have not been asked to carry a wooden cross up my hill."

The inevitable has happened and my hair has mostly become a thing of the past,
And now I must wear hat and turbans and wigs,

But I have not been asked to wear a crown of thorns.
The actions of loved ones and passersby sometimes hurt my heart and I cry,

But I remember another voice,

Maybe a touch of sea green like in the bottom picture? I've seen sea green in action at my friend Darcy Parrish's house. It looks clean and fresh which is snazzy for a kitchen.

I love my family.

My aunt is very special to me.

I couldn't begin to figure out how to pull the delicate and treasured things about her from out of me and surround them in something as concrete as type on a blog.

This last monday we had Family Home Evening at the boys new house. The house is worthy of its own post which will happen as soon as I get some pictures. I almost teared up walking through it the first time. It has more scope for imagination than any place I have ever lived and I covet it mightily. We had homemade potato soup (my grandma peggy's recipe and my favorite for cold times) and bisquits. Nadia gave the lesson about service and being happy by loving other people. Then we topped the night with Always Sunny in Philadelphia, cider, hot chocolate and homemaid caramel corn. Something about all of us cooking and the happy music ( Ray LaMontagne) and the awesome old house...there was like this crazy vibe. Way too Hallmark or something. It was wonderful. I hope to recreate it again soon.

and my plan is to incorporate my bike Marshall got me for my birthday. It is at his house while he adds fenders so no pictures for now. But I am planning upgrades for 2K10. Basket and new saddle seat are the next to come.

I almost choked on want for this necklace. The books have real pages and are made out of vintage leather. mmmmwonderful. Books! Books! Books!

Wow! Inspiration! Wouldn't you love to hide away here for a couple hours? I had to learn to fold origami! And learn I did. I just finished folding 200 paper cranes and butterflies. I am really starting to like DIY wedding projects.

Anthropologie is carrying these amazing puzzles by Trey Speegle. I love the overall appearance of the puzzles enough to have been interested by just that. Then you notice the pieces are made out of shapes like ballerina dancers, sea horses, leaves and eagles. Treasure!!

It is funny to me that I can be around books all day, drowning in them and sorting them and touching literally thousands. Still I want more. I will never be sick of them. They are my glass case wonderments. And my sensibilities continue to be paper cut away as the perfectly fine copy I have of Wuthering Heights is no longer good enough. I get books so frugally at work, sometimes spending nothing, that it is becoming harder and harder for me to buy new books. But this one is cloth bound and a perfectly appropriate beautiful blue. And if I need any book to look this lovely it is Wuthering Heights. Thank you Emily Bronte. I love your book. I am dusting space for this self Christmas gift now. Treasure!!

It is such a nice thing to have things in common with people. It is even nicer for those people to be people who are exciting and fun and clever. Suddenly the things you both love seem even more exciting and fun and clever.

I had the painful realization today that planning a wedding means actually materializing the things I am wanting.

I keep thinking of schemes and finding metal pictures of things that are perfect and I feel like "oh, that takes care of that."

Then I remember I actually have to make these things happen.

Sometimes it is almost funny how much we can break out lives into chapters. Everything can get flipped around when a new character butts into the scene. I keep doing these things that I'm not sure I ever would have before.

This weekend I hiked the Grand Canyon from the North Rim to the South Rim.

24 miles.

11 hours.

miserable. unbelievable. completely worth it.

I'm so glad for this new part of my life. It is so funny to be challenged so much by someone only because I love him and want to live up to everything I think he is.

But no amount of love is going to get me in that canyon again for at least a decade.
